Staff Spotlight: Joy Hickey, Operations & Finance Manager
Joy brings years of experience in non-profit management for arts and humanities organizations to her role as Operations and Finance Manager. Joy’s passion for conservation was sparked at a young age, having grown up overseas as a Navy “brat” and seeing firsthand how the well-being of countries is often linked to the state of the natural environment and the opportunities it offers to local communities. Joy holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Finance from George Mason University in Virginia. Outside of work, you can find Joy eating her way through new towns and adventuring outdoors with her husband, two kids, and German Shepherd.
Tell us about yourself.
Having moved around quite a bit growing up, I strive to connect to nature wherever I live. My husband’s job as a Navy officer brought us to Whidbey Island last year, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to connect to this place and to explore different regions of the state through my role at the Trust. I also currently serve as Treasurer on the board of my husband’s squadron’s Family Readiness Group, whose purpose is to welcome members who are new to the Navy lifestyle or to the command and to provide support during deployments.
Tell us why you care about local food and farming issues.
I have always been very cognizant of my carbon footprint. When I found Washington Farmland Trust, it felt very in line with my values. I’ve been enjoying the local produce available on Whidbey Island where I live and am happy to live in a region where local food is so readily available.
What are you most excited about working on at the organization?
I’m excited to get out on the land through our events. I’m also looking forward to getting to know our staff and board. I admire those who choose board service on behalf of a mission they care about, and I’m excited to learn from them.
What is your hope for the future of farming in Washington?
My biggest hope is that politicians start to take climate change seriously.
